Global Summit of Women 2006 Remarks

Odetter Iskander
Developing & growing long term corporate career

  • Women's pursuit for success in corporate as well as entrepreneurial careers could be restrained by many factors.

  • One highly advertised factor is the glass ceiling. What I would like to discuss however, is a different ceiling that is often overlooked.

  • Success can be hindered by reasons within ourselves.

  • For example, we can face difficulties because of lack of self confidence, lack of tact in dealing with people, or lack of updated knowledge.

  • There are constraints, dilemmas and struggles that we face internally, that deny us from succeeding, and also, from enjoying our accomplishments and from seeking more advancement.

  •  “Success requires us to look inward and understand and get comfortable with ourselves” Cheryl Womack – Chaiperson, LWEW

  • Important factors can be grouped into the following three dimensions; Personal, interpersonal and professional.

  • Personal dimension: Building a healthy SELF

  • SELF Confidence

  • SELF Motivation

  • SELF Esteem

  • SELF Discipline/commitment

  • Result in SELF Achievement

  • Stress management

  • Avoid, fight, or flight

  • Take challenges as opportunities for development

  •  Interpersonal dimension: Building SUPPORTIVE relationships

  • Reconciling/balancing family with work

  • Recognizing that the “superwoman” is a myth

  • Team spirit: Create Respect, peace, and share success

  • The lost gifts of cheerfulness, smiling and listening.

  • Professional dimension: Building an INSPIRING professional life

  • Integrity is a MUST for long term success

  • Win – Win attitude

  •  Give credit

  • Join business associations

  • Continuous learning

  • Conclusion

  •  “When we win our inner battles, we become much more apt to face outside ones” Odette Iskandar

  • The 4 “C”s recipe:

  • Courage

  • Conviction

  • Courtesy

  • Consistency
