GLOBAL WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP AWARDS AND GALA
DINNER Mr. Mitsumasa Kawai recipient of the Entrepreneurship Award
Distinguished guests, Ladies and Gentlemen It is my great pleasure to receive this honorable award at this Summit. My name is Kawai, President of General Engineering Corporation in Tokyo, Japan. While I have been supporting women entrepreneurs since 1994, Today, I would like to talk about the reason why I have been engaged in supporting women entrepreneurs. When we take a look at the social structure of the world, it is real situation that a man is still in the superior position to a woman. It is said that, in the business start-ups field, a possibility for the woman to start doing business is one tenth of that of the man. Under these situations, although I am a man, in 1994 I came to the conclusion to assist and support women who want to start business. When I had the idea, a Managing Director of my main Bank had strongly opposed against my idea and our certified accountant did tell me this is an unrealistic idea. In spite of the situation I did keep my ideas and started the activities of supporting women entrepreneurs on voluntary basis with the sprit of the social service. Fortunately, so far I have been supporting more than 100 women entrepreneurs who are successful in Japan. Recently, I have been engaged in these activities in Vietnam and China as well. When I was invited to participate in Miami Summit in 1997, I was largely moved and attracted by the meaning of this Summit and idea of Ms. Irene Ntividad. Since then, I have been interested in this Summit. As the supporter of this Summit, I would like to contribute to these activities in the future as well as I did. From bottom of my heart, I really hope prosperity, success and happiness of this Summit. Thank you very much for the award and your kind attention.
